Whatever you choose, get on it

High school is a very interesting time for everybody. We begin to figure out who we really are and what we really want to do with our lives. This can be scary because after high school you are on your own. If you are going to do something, then it is up to you to get it done. No one is going to push you to do things.

How will you achieve your goals?

Going from high school into society is daunting. Some might not have the skills needed after high school, while others will. Whatever you choose to do, you have to get on it. If you do not look for a job then you will not have any money, or if you do not submit your college applications then you will not be getting into those schools.

It is a lot of responsibility for someone who just turned 18, but you cannot just stay at the side of your family forever. At some point you need to be honest and figure out what you want to do with your life. Most people have had an idea of what they wanted to do since they were young.

Next you have to figure out what is necessary to accomplish your goals, whether that means submitting college applications or going to a recruitment center for the military. Once you know what is necessary, then you can really throw yourself into it.

Do well in school, but have fun

Before that, though, you have to make sure you do well in high school! Do not put off studying until testing time comes around. Even if you know you can salvage a bad grade you are only hurting yourself by not studying. If you keep slacking off it is going to come back and bite you. Take school seriously; you need to be there, so you might as well try to learn something.

Now that does not mean you have to just do school. Have fun in those four years, find a hobby, hang out, join clubs, do sports. There is really something out there for everybody. And if there is not, then you start up a club! Odds are you are going to find others with similar interests. Being with people who share your interests is so great because you know that there is something between the two of you.

I met my best friends this way. I just started talking, and we figured out that we like the same music and we love cameras, photography, and film. We started up a Film Club at our school and now we get around 15 people every meeting. It is so amazing how one thing can bring all kinds of people together.

So do not be afraid to let others know what you are into. And do not be afraid to indulge in what you like. If you like to sing, do choir or a talent show. Put yourself out there because those skills are going to help you once you get out into society as an adult.

“What are your plans after high school?”
My plans for next year are to pass my three AP classes and their respective exams while keeping my GPA at a 3.8 or above and enjoying my last year of high school.
